Most of the musicians who played on Each Waking Hour fronted up again for Little Rebellion. David Hyams led the way with his electric and acoustic guitar work, mandolin and blues harp. Roy Martinez and Elliot Smith were in great form on bass and drums, and Kris Kingwell again graces the album with her sublime singing on 10 the songs. Kris’s solo vocals on Enough of a Plan were a highlight for me. Rose Parker very kindly provided some terrific BVs on a couple of tracks, and thanks again to Melanie Robinson for playing cello. I was thrilled when Perth violinist Lizzie Farrelly agreed to play violin. Between them, Melanie and Lizzie successfully replicated the sound of an entire orchestral strings section; well, nearly, anyway! Last but by no means least, thanks to Lee Buddle for his great work on sax for On The Fence (the closing song on the album) along with something I never expected – a recorder part on Mandalay!
Little Rebellion had a long incubation period, but was eventually launched at Freo Social in August 2019. Check out some launch photos on the Gallery page. What a great venue Freo Social is – a terrific stage and sound and lighting setup, some of WA’s best beers and wines on tap, and they miraculously provided table service meals (to the right tables) throughout the night. A highlight of the launch was the brilliant opening set by Craig Colvin and his daughters Bec and Maddie- thanks guys!
Finally, a note about the front and back covers of the Little Rebellion CD. These are paintings by acclaimed Perth artist Sue Cross. I thought the paintings were just perfect for the CD cover. Many thanks to Sue for permission to use her paintings! If you want to check out some more of Sue’s great work, please click on the following link to her website: Sue’s website
